This weekend, I had the chance to watch my ten-year-old son’s travel ball team in action at their tournament. The first day didn’t go as planned. They struggled right out of the gate, and it felt like the wind was taken out of their sails early on. Despite their best efforts, they never quite mentally recovered from that initial setback.
After the games, their coach, Steve, gathered the boys for a chat. He stepped up and did exactly what a great coach should do. He reminded them that everyone has off days and emphasized the importance of getting into a positive headspace. He encouraged them to rest, refuel, and come back the next morning ready to bring their A-game.
Steve pointed out that they weren’t giving 100% and that they were capable of much more than what they had shown. His approach was filled with kindness; he recognized that the kids were already beating themselves up and what they needed was a boost of motivation and encouragement.
Steve has a remarkable way of supporting them both on and off the field, setting an example of discipline, accountability, and kindness. It’s a balance that many coaches overlook, but it’s exactly what these kids need. Because of this supportive environment, the energy shifted completely.
Sunday morning, these kids showed up at the field with a renewed spirit, ready to fight for their spot in the championship. They weren’t just playing for themselves; they were in it for each other, for their coach, and for the title.
When they hit the field on Sunday, it was like a different team had emerged. They played with intensity and focus, completely dominating their opponents. In the end, they won the championship by a landslide, and the joy on their faces was unforgettable. They ran onto the field throwing their hats and gloves in the air, yelling and jumping on each other! It was a weekend of highs and lows, but witnessing their comeback was a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from support, teamwork, and a great coach like Steve.
This camaraderie builds resilience and shows them how to support each other, not just in sports but in every part of life. It’s a strong reminder that true success comes from working together and lifting one another up, helping them become compassionate individuals who genuinely value unity and support.
A huge thank you to Coach Steve WIlliams and our amazing assistant coaches of Clarksville Klutch 10U for being such wonderful role models for these boys, and a HUGE congratulations to the team on their incredible comeback and victory!
